The Forestry Commission announced that applications are now open (as of 9 June 2021) for the new multimillion tree planting scheme. The England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) has been established to generate opportunities and incentives for landowners and farmers to plant and maintain trees.
The scheme supports the creation of a range of woodland types with funding primarily focused on planting large scale native broadleaf woodlands, well-designed majority conifer and mixed woodlands. There is also a particular focus on ensuring the right tree is planted in the right place; the EWCO have encouraged extending existing woodlands, planting trees to benefit water habitats and designing areas that provide public benefits including greater access.
The grant covers the full cost of establishing woodland and annual maintenance payments for 10 years. Further contributions can be issued for well-designed woodland that provides additional benefits. The grant supports a range of land scales, starting with a minimum requirement of just 1 hectare per application and 0.1 hectare per block.
This is an exciting time for landowners and farmers as new schemes and grants emerge to support a greener way of life whilst generating financial opportunities. The EWCO is a competitive scheme with funding offered on a first-come, first-served basis - don't wait around and get your application in today!
