With the sun beating down and the temperature reaching a not so cool 27°, Gepp & Sons teamed up with a number of other local firms and business to walk for Charity.
The Chelmsford Legal Walk is a 9km sponsored walk that sets off from New London Road, follows the River Can all the way out to Writtle and winds back through the countryside finishing off with a pint at the Cricketers on Moulsham Street. The money raised by the teams taking part will go towards the Eastern Legal Support Trust, a charity that raises money to support free legal services in the local area, providing advice and access to justice for those members of society who might not otherwise be able to obtain legal services. The need for free legal advice centres has grown, and continues to grow, due to increased poverty and reduced support services. The Eastern Legal Support Trust assists organisations which help those more vulnerable members of society including elderly people, families living in poor housing conditions, people who suffer from disability or illness as well as their carers, men and women working for less than minimum wage, women and children who have been trafficked to the UK and people who have been unfairly dismissed or discriminated against at work.
The Gepps team, armed with sun cream and lots of water, met the many other walkers at the Trinity Chambers in Chelmsford. The route led us into Central Park and along the river, which was a shaded relief from the heat of the sun! We followed the river into Admirals Park where we passed a number of sun worshippers soaking up the rays and enjoying the beautifully sunny evening, some were even taking a dip in a quiet pool in the river, something a few of the walkers would have been grateful for at this stage in the trek! The path soon opened up and led us alongside sprawling corn fields, giving us the opportunity to take in the beauty of the countryside that surrounds Chelmsford.
After looping around the outskirts of Writtle it was time to head back to the finish line, back along the river and through the parks until eventually the Cricketers was in sight. A well-earned, and much needed, cold drink was our reward and a welcome end to what had been a fun, successful and rewarding evening. As it stands so far, the Chelmsford Legal Walk has raised over £2000, a fantastic effort all round. We are already looking forward to next year, although we will hope for slightly cooler weather next time!
