Gepp & Sons Gets Historical!

  • Posted

Two-hundred-and-fifty years ago this year our founder, Edward Gepp, moved to Chelmsford. Shortly afterwards, he was to train as a lawyer and set up that business in the town which was to encompass six generations of his own family and is still flourishing today as Gepp & Sons. The firm is publishing a book to mark this special anniversary. 'The Way We Worked', the product of 18 months research by James Gilder who works for the firm, provides a fascinating insight into the life that Edward Gepp would have experienced in Georgian Chelmsford, as well as a record of the important part that Gepp & Sons have played in the history of the town and indeed the county for the last two and a half centuries. Packed with photos and illustrations which have been kindly donated by many individuals and by the Essex Records Office, 'The Way We Worked' is a unique collection of memories and research, and will be of interest not only to those with a connection to Gepp & Sons, but to anyone with an interest in the history of Chelmsford or the law. For copyright reasons we are not allowed to sell the book, however copies will be available in return for a donation to the Essex Regimental Museum. Should you be interested in obtaining a copy, we would ask that you get in touch with Richard Matthams, Practice Director, by email at
