All can provide the Board with their evidence and opinions and have until Friday 4 November 2011 to do so. This year has seen many such calls for the regulation of will-writers and similar service providers in order to protect consumers. Some companies cold-call clients and quote fees that seem to have been plucked out of the air, being far more than is reasonable to charge. Indeed, one professional forum has seen recent cases where cold-callers have quoted £2,400 for a Lasting Power of Attorney and some other small pieces of work and another who was quoted £1,300 for a Will update (which did not incorporate anything extraordinary), with the intention that this was done urgently. Four weeks later, nothing had been heard from the will-writer and she contacted a Solicitor. These instances are, unfortunately, not few and far between. If you need to take legal advice we would highly recommend going to see a Solicitor, as they are a regulated professional. The call to regulate will be much welcomed and whilst the plans have now been extended to incorporate the areas of probate and estate administration, it may not be long before it also calls for regulation in respect of the preparation and registration of Enduring and Lasting Powers of Attorney. If you require advice in relation to dealing with an estate, preparing a Will, amending a Will or registering an Enduring Power of Attorney or preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney please contact our Private Client team on 01245 228107, or email email@example.com, who will be able to assist you. The above is not legal advice; it is intended to provide information of general interest about current legal issues.
