Supporting our local community

17 February 2017

As a homegrown firm, supporting the local community is at the heart of what we do. Having been based in Essex since 1768, we have established a deep connection with the community and we believe it’s important for businesses to do their bit. The Gepp & Sons team are committed to Corporate Social Responsibility, and we are very proud of the team’s efforts to do their bit for charity. In this weeks blog, we run through some of the CSR and charity activities we’ve been getting up to and the important causes behind them.

Columbus School and College

First and foremost, we were thrilled to select Columbus School and College as our charity of the year at Gepp & Sons.  The Columbus School and College is based in Chelmsford and caters for for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties aged 3–19 years. The school’s ethos is that every child and young person deserves to access the best opportunities, and they take a holistic approach to helping every child achieve their individual goals. The work the Columbus School and College does is inspiring and incredibly important, and we are thrilled to support this very worthy cause.

The Boccia Tournament

For those who haven’t heard of it, Boccia is a game of strategy and accuracy that is designed for people with impairments that affect their motor skills. The way the game is played is very similar to bowls. In 1984 it was recognised as a Paralympic Sport and has been growing ever since.

The Essex Boccia Ball Final was held at the Columbus School and College in Chelmsford and our representatives had the pleasure of presenting the awards on behalf of Lord’s Taverners.

Disability schools from across the county came together to take part in what was a closely fought battle of skill and determination. It was amazing to see how much pleasure and reward this simple game gave many profoundly disabled youngsters.

Who are the Lord’s Taverners?

The Lord’s Taverners are a leading, long-established UK charity dedicated to giving disadvantaged and disabled young people a sporting chance. Their aim is to give children and young people with disabilities more opportunities to participate in sport, and they do this by providing specialist equipment, accessible minibuses, play spaces and much more.

Other charity work and what’s to come in 2017

Over the Christmas period the Gepp & Sons team got very much into the festive spirit, taking part in a number of charitable events, including:

  • Two bake sales and a Christmas raffle for Columbus School and College,
  • Christmas Jumper Day for Save the Children,
  • Contributing Christmas boxes for Operation Christmas Child
  • A toy collection for children at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Charity is not just for Christmas, of course, and at Gepp & Sons, we try to get involved with as much as we can throughout the year. We are proud to carry out a lot of work to support local schools, and we’re looking forward to continuing our support for the local community as well as national and international charities.  2017 is certainly set to be a busy year, with various exciting events already in the calendar – watch this space!
