March 5th 2020- otherwise known as World Book Day.
World Book Day is a charity funded by publishers and booksellers in the UK & Ireland.
The charity are on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own.4 It’s also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading.
Research found that children who participate in World Book Day activities, are more engaged in reading and books than those who don’t.
- Nearly 3 in 5 felt that they read more books
- Nearly half say they buy more books
- Over 2 in 5 borrow and share more books
- A third also read more with their parents due to taking part in World Book Day, with half of those believing they subsequently read more independently (The National Literacy Trust’s Annual Literacy Survey, 2019)
- 1 in 4 pupils (25.2%) say that the book they ‘bought’ with their 2016 World Book Day book token was their first book of their own.
- Amongst children receiving free school meals, this number increased to 3 in 10 (32.9%; National Literacy Trust, 2017)
- Lower income families are likely to discover books through World Book Day (Nielsen, 2018)
Over two-hundred-and-fifty years ago, our founder, Edward Gepp, moved to Chelmsford. Shortly afterwards, he was to train as a lawyer and set up that business in the town which was to encompass six generations of his own family and is still flourishing today as Gepp Solicitors.
The firm published a book in 2011, The Way We Worked.
The book is the product of 18 months research and provides a fascinating insight into the life that Edward Gepp would have experienced in Georgian Chelmsford, as well as a record of the important part that Gepp Solicitors have played in the history of the town and indeed the county for the last two and a half centuries.
Packed with photos and illustrations which have been kindly donated by many individuals and by the Essex Records Office, The Way We Worked is a unique collection of memories and research, and will be of interest not only to those with a connection to Gepp Solicitors, but to anyone with an interest in the history of Chelmsford or the law.
We've been here over 250 years..

And we're proud of The Firm is organised into several different departments, being Commercial Law, Criminal Law, Dispute Resolution, Employment Law, Family Law, Private Client (dealing with Wills, Probate and Trusts), Commercial and Residential Property and Rural Services (Agriculture Law) with the legal staff in each department being considerable experts in their field. Life itself, of course, is not so neatly divided, therefore all the staff within our departments work closely together calling on each other’s services as and when required.
