We have all, at some point, bought food from a drive-thru. We think nothing of grabbing a cup of coffee whilst in our car but it is worth noting that motorists who use the drive-thru to get their burger, fries and shake might be unknowingly risking a hefty fine — and could even lose their license.
Grabbing your favourite fast food whist on the go or even paying at the pump could see you hit with a £1,000 fine and six penalty points due to mobile phone laws.
If you pay by using your phone at a drive-thru, you are automatically breaking the law by using a handheld devices behind the wheel. Mobile phone payment apps such as Apple Pay or Google Pay have grown in popularity over the past few years, but the law still applies to this kind of mobile phone usage.
Drivers should ensure that their engine is off and the handbrake applied.
