Chocolates, roses, romantic meals for two spring to mind, or perhaps even diamonds so Happy Valentine's Day!
Whilst it's not something any of us tends to dwell on, sadly it is a fact that not all couples will enjoy a long term relationship together, however rosy things start out. So whether a diamond ring features in your plans or not, once the initial excitement of the occasion has passed, a little thought about securing your future can be worthwhile.
It is so much easier to have rational and practical discussions up front rather than once a relationship has broken down. For instance, if you buy a property with your partner and contribute different amounts then a Declaration of Trust could enable you to protect your interest in the joint property (see Gregory John's article on January 11th 2018). And did you know that marriage invalidates an existing Will? There's more on this topic in Steven Payne's article of September 8th 2017.
So, in the words of the character Jack Reacher, "Hope for the best, plan for the worst ……………".
